Module 7 — Navamsa (D-9) Intro

What the D-9 is, why it matters, and how to compute a navamsa sign by hand.

What is a divisional chart?

A varga ('division') chart slices each sign into smaller parts and re-projects them onto a fresh 12-sign chart. Different divisions reveal different layers — Navamsa (D-9) is the most important after the D-1 because it shows the inner strength of each planet and the spouse.

Why D-9?

Each pada in the D-1 corresponds to one navamsa. So the D-9 is the 'fine print' of your chart — a planet that looks fine in D-1 but is debilitated in D-9 is weaker than it appears. Navamsa is also the primary chart for marriage analysis.

How to calculate (by hand)

Each sign (30°) splits into 9 navamsa parts of 3°20' each. Where the count starts depends on the sign's modality: Movable (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Cap) → starts from the sign itself. Fixed (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) → starts from the 9th sign from itself. Dual (Gemini, Virgo, Sag, Pisces) → starts from the 5th sign from itself. Then count forward by however many 3°20' parts the planet has crossed.

Worked example

Moon at 11° Capricorn 21'. Capricorn is movable, so the count starts from Capricorn. 11°21' / 3°20' = 3 full parts (with remainder). So the Moon is in the 4th navamsa from Capricorn = Aries. Use the Decoder to verify.
